With a history stretching back millennia, traditional Chinese furniture reached its pinnacle during the Ming and Qing dynasties, becoming a treasured part of China’s cultural heritage and earning a distinguished place in global furniture history. Among Qing-style furniture, Guangzuo (Cantonese-style) furniture stands as its most representative form, celebrated for its superb materials, diverse forms, ornate decoration, exquisite craftsmanship, and unmistakable regional style. Sought after by nobles, wealthy households, and even international buyers, Cantonese-style furniture was exported worldwide and admired across continents.

This exhibition—the first of its kind—brings together Cantonese-style furniture masterpieces and archival records from the Guangdong Museum, the Palace Museum, and other major collections. Through original artifacts paired with historical documentation, recreated interior settings, and demonstrations of traditional craftsmanship, the exhibition traces the development of Cantonese-style furniture from the late Ming dynasty to the Republican era. It offers a vivid portrait of its golden age, explores its cultural significance, and celebrates the enduring spirit of precision and excellence embodied in Guangdong craftsmanship—contributing to the continued transmission and innovation of Cantonese-style furniture techniques.
