About Guangdong Museum (Guangzhou Lu Xun Museum)

Guangdong Museum (Guangzhou Lu Xun Museum) was officially opened on October 1, 1959. It is one of the first National First-Grade Museums and a key national museum jointly constructed by central and local governments. Receiving over 4 million visitors annually, it is an important window for visitors from around the world to appreciate outstanding traditional Chinese culture and understand world civilizations.

Guangdong Museum (Guangzhou Lu Xun Museum) currently operates across two locations: the Zhujiang New Town complex and the Wenming Road complex, with a total floor area of 77,000 square meters. The architectural design of the Zhujiang New Town complex is inspired by a traditional Chinese lacquer box, and its spatial concept draws from the traditional Guangdong craft of the ivory puzzle ball. The overall concept of the complex is "a vessel full of treasures on a green ribbon." The Wenming Road complex includes the Guangzhou Lu Xun Museum, the Site of the First National Congress of the Kuomintang, and the Mingyuan Tower of the Guangdong Gongyuan (Imperial Examination Hall).

The Museum’s collections represent the essence of Lingnan cultural heritage, bringing together a rich array of historical, artistic, revolutionary, and natural artifacts. It is the largest and most diverse museum in South China, with more than 320,000 items in its permanent collection. Among them, ancient calligraphy and painting and ceramics rank among the finest in China, while distinctive collections of export art, recovered underwater cultural relics, overseas Chinese artifacts, Chaozhou wood carvings, and Duan inkstones are among the most outstanding in the country.

In recent years, rooted in Lingnan culture, the Museum has radiated throughout the Guangdong–Hong Kong–Macao Greater Bay Area, and engaged with the global community. While embracing the development philosophy of building a “Safe, Beautiful, Academia-oriented, Quality, and Innovative Museum,” it has made remarkable progress in collection development, exhibitions, public education, academic research, digital initiatives, and communication, winning top honors in China’s most prestigious museum exhibition awards for 12 consecutive years. Through these achievements, the Museum continues to contribute to building up the cultural strength of Guangdong Province, while sharing with the world compelling stories of Guangdong, the Greater Bay Area, and China.
