Hosted by the Guangdong Museum, co-organized by the Century Amber Museum (Bao’an District, Shenzhen), the Zhiyin Museum (Chancheng District, Foshan), and several other institutions, the exhibition “Amber Art: A Moment Buried En Resin” opened grandly in No. 3 Exhibition Hall on the 3rd floor of Guangdong Museum.
The exhibition features more than 700 pieces, including raw amber, insect- and plant-bearing amber, carved amber artworks, amber jewelry, amber antiquities, and contemporary amber art. Supported by the museum’s collections of animal and plant specimens, the exhibition explores the science and cultural history of amber—its formation, distribution, classification, symbolism, and artistic expression. Through these tiny windows into deep time, visitors are invited to experience the mystery of ancient worlds sealed tens of millions of years ago. Drawing on myths such as “the tears of the goddess” and “tiger’s soul,” the exhibition introduces the scientific formation of amber and displays examples of varied origins, colors, composition, and inclusions. Extensive insect-amber specimens vividly present biological and non-biological remains from prehistoric ecosystems. The exhibition culminates in amber artworks crafted by ancient and modern artists from around the world, highlighting humanity’s timeless fascination with amber and the diverse artistic interpretations shaped by different cultures and eras. An immersive gallery environment recreates the prehistoric forest in which amber formed, showcasing the remarkable diversity of amber from locations such as the Baltic region and the Dominican Republic, from marine sediments to deep mining sites. Interactive installations—including the spectacular Amber Palace, digital treasure hunts, the Amber Life Wall, artificial amber displays, and writing activities about amber—enhance visitor engagement, making this a full-sensory exploration of natural history and artistic creativity.
As part of the museum’s annual series on natural science popularization, this exhibition integrates geology, paleontology, botany, zoology, and gemology. It represents an innovative exploration of curating exhibitions that weave together nature, culture, and art, and it serves as a rare showcase of amber art from around the world.
